Deadlines, and Expenses

April 17, 2006 is the deadline for the application and a $20.00(U.S.) application fee. Students are encouraged to apply early, as spaces are limited, and will be filled as applications are reviewed. Completed applications should be mailed to the above address.

The cost of the 2006 program is $3800.00(U.S.), including tuition, all accommodations (including breakfast), all production-, workshop-, and class-related expenses, program- and excursion-related travel, all admission fees and activities, and some group meals. Only a limited amount of partial scholarships are available from The Fourth World and its partners. Applicants are encouraged to research and apply for grants and scholarships made available through unaffiliated organizations or their home institutions. With the notice of acceptance, extended Visa information and assistance will be provided, and a discounted wholesale airfare from various locations within The United States will be offered. For those participants traveling from or to locations outside the United States, or who wish to return on later dates, The Fourth World will do everything possible to assist with acquiring affordable itineraries. Although individual needs vary, each participant should plan on having access to approximately $325.00(U.S.) for personal expenses and additional meals, plus funds for discretionary spending. The cost of living in Bulgaria is quite inexpensive, but is steadily rising. (ATMs are widely available, and are recommended for currency conversion.) For all accepted applicants, deposits in the amount of $1000.00(U.S.) are due by May 8, 2006 to confirm registration. For all participants, the remaining balance of $2800.00(U.S.) is due by June 5, 2006. It is recommended that students (currently enrolled in a degree program) inquire with their academic advisers, and seek credits towards their degrees, as appropriate for their fields of study and home institutions' requirements. The Fourth World will assist students by supplying a detailed description of the program, as well as other necessary documents.

Housing

For the bulk of the program, while in Smolyan, student and professional participants of The Collective are housed in the private, recently-renovated Hotel "Moni", which is within walking distance of the Rhodopi Dramatichen Theater and the town's New Center. Participants are placed in single-occupancy, well-adorned rooms with private bathrooms and televisions with cable programming. Complimentary breakfast is served each morning in the hotel's restaurant. Short-term excursion accommodations vary- depending on the location and occupancy availability- but are generally comparable to the facilities at the base in Smolyan. In addition to breakfast daily, participants attend group dinners and receptions included in the fee for The Collective- usually at least twice a week, depending on the arrival and departure dates of visiting faculty and artists, the scheduling of performances, and birthdays/celebrations/etc.
